QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"…we see many folks who may think a Google or an Apple or a hyperscaler building a data center may be a better credit than the United States government."

Alex Morris — Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer, F/m Investments
MONEY FM 89.3, The Business Report, Sep 18.

THEME OF THE WEEK · AI DOESN'T CARE ABOUT INTEREST RATES

Last issue, the AI buildout started asking its customers to pay for it. Since then the money got more expensive and almost nothing flinched. The Fed raised rates a quarter point on September 16, its first hike since July 2023. The ten-year had closed at 5.00% the day before, its first close at or above that level since July 2007, and closed at 5.01% on the day of the decision. Freddie Mac's thirty-year survey rate reached 6.95%, its highest since January 2025. Then the Nasdaq closed at a record high on Monday, and again on Tuesday. Here is the argument over whether the AI trade cares.

Dennis Dick — Proprietary Trader, Triple D Trading
PreMarket Prep · Sep 17

"…what I have said on this show probably 100 times, you guys are probably sick of hearing it, is that AI doesn’t care about interest rates… a lot of these stocks are levered, so maybe they should care. But the growth is so explosive on these companies that a quarter point hike is not going to slow it down."

Jun Bei Liu — Founder & Lead Portfolio Manager, Ten Cap
CNA938 Rewind · Sep 16

"…hyperscalers and the AI investments, that part of the market is already getting an interest rate… in that whole higher, high single digit mark with the long end yield above five… are these hyperscalers going to generate returns based on that kind of interest outlook?"

Josh Wein — Portfolio Manager, Hennessy Funds
Street Talk · Sep 21

"…I think that the market has moved away from focusing on the Fed as much as they used to. And I think that what we saw in the second quarter was about 15% plus revenue growth for the S&P 500. So in an economy that’s growing at low single digits, I think that that speaks volumes about what keeps investors engaged despite some challenging headlines around oil and interest rates… I think that if it went to 5.5%, I don’t see the growth story getting unwound, maybe above that."

MACRO & RATES · A DOSE OF ACCOMMODATION

August retail sales rose 1.2%, against the 0.7% to 0.8% economists expected. Hours later the Fed hiked, twelve votes to zero, and sixteen of the eighteen officials who submitted forecasts now pencil in at least one more hike this year, with 2% inflation not reached until 2029. High-yield spreads ended the week three basis points wider.

Kevin Warsh — Chair, Federal Reserve
Bloomberg Daybreak: US Edition · Sep 16

"Inflation remains elevated. Today’s policy action will support a timelier return to the Committee’s 2% goal… I would be hard-pressed to describe broad financial conditions as restrictive. This view was widely shared by the Committee, so we removed a dose of accommodation."

Ben Ramsey — Head of EM Sovereign Credit Strategy, J.P. Morgan
At Any Rate · Sep 17

"…spreads have been range-bound at very tight levels. This sharp move up in Treasuries, and especially we’ve seen in the long end, has translated basically almost one for one into yields, but not into spreads. So the spread has stayed stable." — on emerging-market sovereign bonds

Heidi Learner — Managing Director & Director of Research, SIFMA
The SIFMA Podcast · Sep 15

"…another thing I think I’d watch, rather than credit spreads more broadly, is looking at CDS. So looking at where that default protection trades, particularly for some of these names where there has been a rising debt load. But at least for now, that crowding out effect… the competition between government issuance and corporate borrowers competing for the same pool of capital hasn’t really led to rising credit spreads."

◈ PHI MOVERS — HOTTEST & COLDEST THIS WEEK
Public stocks gaining and losing the most conversation vs. baseline · Sep 14–20

▲ HOTTEST

Lennar  LEN

PHI 3.3  · Q3 missed on both lines, delivery target cut again

Circle Internet Group  CRCL

PHI 2.1  · SEC cleared trading in certain tokenized stocks, crypto names rallied

Berkshire Hathaway  BRK.B

PHI 2.1  · Buffett stepped down as chairman, Howard Buffett takes the chair

Fortinet  FTNT

▼ COLDEST

Chewy  CHWY

PHI 0.5  · talk of its September 9 earnings faded

KKR  KKR

PHI 0.6  · talk cooled even as alt-manager shares fell on rate-hike worries (WSJ)

PHI — Particle Heat Index: how much a company is being mentioned on podcasts versus its own 4-week baseline. 1.0 = normal; 2.0 = twice the usual chatter. Movers are ranked by distance from that baseline across the US-listed names we track. We read the transcript lines behind every name we print and remove spikes that came from namesakes or unrelated chatter. Full methodology ↓

COMPANY SIGNALS · TWO ECONOMIES

Meta launched Muse, a personal AI agent, on September 8. It reached the top of Apple's free app rankings. Meta rose 11% on Monday, AMD crossed a trillion dollars in market value, and Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com. The rate-sensitive half of the economy had a different week, though Lennar rose 6% on Tuesday after Berkshire Hathaway disclosed buying $212 million of its stock.

Mandeep Singh — Global Head of Technology Research, Bloomberg Intelligence  META
Bloomberg News Now · Sep 22

"This is probably the best personal agent chatbot that we have seen so far, and clearly Meta, with its rich history of consumers through their family of apps, is able to provide a lot more tailored experience."

Suryansh Sharma — Director of Equity Research, Morningstar  LEN
Schwab Network · Sep 16

"…Lennar has very aggressively shifted to a strategy where they’ve moved from owning land on their balance sheet towards optioning land and controlling land through option contracts. As a result of that strategy, they’ve moved towards an even flow model. What that means is that the production of homes remains constant irrespective of what is happening in the external market environment. And because your production of homes remains steady, pricing or margins become the shock absorber." — said hours before Lennar missed on both lines after the close

THE KICKER · THE TAPE IS SPEAKING

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a slower AI frontier earlier this month, Altman and Musk backed him, and the chipmakers sold off. One of the contrarian traders in Jack Schwager's Unknown Market Wizards watched what happened next.

Jason Shapiro — Founder, Crowded Market Report
Resource Talks · Sep 20

"…AI went from being the thing that’s going to save the world to the thing that’s going to end the world, right, and meanwhile ever since then those stocks have outperformed, right, so again, the tape is speaking and that to me is the loudest."

◈ THE PARTICLE HEAT INDEX (PHI), EXPLAINED
The number next to the companies we track in this issue

The formula. PHI = distinct podcast episodes mentioning the company in the most recent full week ÷ its average weekly episodes over the trailing four weeks, computed from entity mentions across 140,000+ actively transcribed podcasts in Particle's podcast intelligence database. Movers are ranked across the US-listed companies we track.

How to read it. It's a ratio with no ceiling. A quiet company that suddenly hits the news can print 10 or higher. Pills are colored by temperature: blue for cold, gray for baseline, warming to red as conversation heats up. Before a name is printed we read the transcript lines behind it, so a spike is real discussion of the company and not a coincidence of names.

0 — silent this week 0.6 — cooler than normal (KKR) 1.0 — baseline chatter 1.8 — running hot (Fortinet) 3.3 — this week's extreme (Lennar)
